2017 #SMSociety Theme: Social Media for Social Good or Evil

Our online behaviour is far from virtual–it extends our offline lives. Much social media research has identified the positive opportunities of using social media; for example, how people use social media to form support groups online, participate in political uprising, raise money for charities, extend teaching and learning outside the classroom, etc. However, mirroring offline experiences, we have also seen social media being used to spread propaganda and misinformation, recruit terrorists, live stream criminal activities, reinforce echo chambers by politicians, and perpetuate hate and oppression (such as racist, sexist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic behaviour).

I hold a personal research chair in new media, communication and cultural studies. My research focuses on Persona Studies and how individuals display themselves publicly and strategically in online and mediatized structures. This research has emerged from an intersection and mutation of celebrity research - where I have written some of the key works in that field - with new media and its transformation of communication. Recent works in this area include the journal Persona Studies which I co-founded along with my recent books - Celebrity Persona Pandemic (Minnesota 2016), Contemporary Publics (Palgrave 2016), and A Companion to Celebrity (Wiley 2016) - and articles "Monitoring Persona" (2015), "Public Exposure" (2016) and "Intercommunication" (2015). Current research is investigating comparative( national and transnational) persona and professional persona and their transformations in online culture.
